Disclaimer: The Orphan Complex is in no way meant to be insensitive towards orphans, it is merely a concept.
Why You Should Live Life Like You Have No Parents
Have you ever thought of what life would be like if one day you no longer had parents? Would you survive or would you crumble? Some of us are so comfortable under our parents’ wings that we don’t consider the possibility of them no longer being at our disposal.
I remember when I told my dad I wanted to drop out of university…this was the third time. In this final conversation, he asked me a question: ‘What would you do if one day I couldn’t provide for you anymore or I died?’. From this question, the ‘Orphan Complex’ was birthed.
Free As A Bird…
Ask yourself if your parents were to vanish right now, would you have the slightest sense of relief? Not in a sinister sense, but rather would you feel like some pressure had been taken off of your shoulders? Or maybe you’d feel that you no longer have to live up to their expectations. Would you still carry on with the degree or career that you are currently pursuing or would you alter your direction?
Living like an orphan, you have no one else’s expectations to live up to but your own. The decisions you make in your life should be based on your opinion. But the thing is most people don’t notice this until it’s too late

Do or Die
What’s the next move? For most of us, our parents are our main providers, our main source of income. So what happens when that is stripped away from you? Well, you have to find a way to survive. You start to think outside the box. The rules of this game called life completely change, now it’s do or die.
You have to find a way to provide for yourself (and your siblings). You’ll probably do things that you would never have considered because now you’re way out of your comfort zone and now you have no choice but to embrace it. Those business ideas you once had are immediately brought to life again. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to you, you go out and find opportunities for yourself because now there is no safety net.
Why don’t we make such decisions when we are safe and we can experiment? We shouldn’t need to be put in extreme circumstances before we start to make the right decisions.
Put Some Respek On Their Name
Carphone Warehouse has bred some real hustlers. How? Well, the moment you take responsibility from your parents for your own phone bills, things get serious. What seemed like ‘just £30’ now seems like a lot more. You begin to think more logically about your habits and that’s just a phone bill. Imagine what it takes to be responsible for your day-to-day living costs, now imagine what it takes to be responsible for the day-to-day living costs of a family.
Once you get a taste of that responsibility, the respect you have for your parents (or guardians), and friends who aren’t as fortunate as you begins to change.
So What Am I Saying?
Sometimes in life, we need to let go of the safety nets around us to get a better, clearer image of how things really are or could be. Your life is yours to live, and if by mistake you don’t take control of it soon enough, you risk having a rude awakening in the future. You’ll come to a point where you’ll realise you don’t know what you want in life. And that safety net is no longer there for you to fall back on (i.e. Free education, accommodation, free food).
At some point in life you’re going to have to fend for yourself (and your family) so why not get used to it now? Start by taking responsibility for the little things like paying your phone bill, getting your driver’s license, making a bit of money for yourself. So that when the day does come where you’re left alone, you won’t be unfamiliar with the feeling of responsibility.
Let me know what you think of the Orphan Complex on social media, do you get where I’m coming from or am I being ‘Fake Deep’?
